Obituary for Thomas Edward Sweeny

Thomas Edward  Sweeny
Rev. Thomas Edward Sweeny, Dcn, September 27, 1942 – June 13, 2018, “Reverend Tom” would like to let you know that his work here is done. He received a call, a sort of an offer you can’t refuse, for an appointment from which he will not be returning. His new mission takes him to a wonderful place where he will be socializing, dancing, and reading to his heart’s content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. Food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. He left detailed instructions for his family and friends to celebrate his mission here, which has now been completed.
The Rev. Thomas E. Sweeny, Dcn is predeceased by his beloved wife with whom he celebrated over 50 years of marriage, Bari C. Sweeny, mother Susan (Drake) Sweeny and father, Thomas E. Sweeny III. He is survived by his sister Gail (Sweeny) Weston, daughter Cori E. Coane (Sweeny) & husband Fred, Sons Thomas E. Sweeny IV, James M. Sweeny & wife Jennifer, Grandchildren Thomas E. Sweeny V, Scott Breder, Jillian & Julia Sweeny.
Rev. Tom was the Atlantic County Fire Chaplain and served at the Church of Saint Mark and All Saints Church in Galloway NJ. He was ordained to the Holy Catholic Church in the Episcopal Diocese of N.J. after completing three years of schooling as well as six hundred hours at Toms River Community Hospital for Clinical Pastoral Education. Rev. Sweeny served on the Dioceses of New Jersey’s Committee for Diaconal Education and Formation, has served on the Diocesan Mission Board, and The Diocesan Deacons Council.
Rev. Sweeny had over 59 years in the Fire Service with 50 of those years in the Cardiff Vol. Fire Co., EHT, NJ and having served in various offices including that of Chief.
Rev. Sweeny is a past member of the Atlantic County OEM Advisory Board. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, member of the American Legion, the 157th Field Artillery Association, Enlisted Association of the NJ National Guard and the Association of the United States Army.
Rev. Sweeny is a retired First Sergeant NJ Army National Guard, having served on active duty in the US Navy and the US Coast Guard prior to enlisting in the NJ Army National Guard. He is retired from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers LU 351.
Viewing and services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Saint Mark & All Saints Church, 429 S. Pitney Rd, Galloway NJ. Viewing 10 a.m. to 12 noon and service to start immediately following. Reception to follow and all are welcomed at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center 5045 English Creek, EHT.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent in his name to any one of the organizations he loved. The Last Salute Military Funeral Honor Guard of Galloway, Cardiff Vol. Fire Company, or Saint Mark & All Saints Columbaria fund.
