Condolence From: Glenn Edward Druce
Condolence: Most of us can rightly be described as “beloved.” But that description, in most cases would better be stated as “beloved by a few.” Not so for Tom Sweeny. He knew how to be a good friend. He knew how to be a good husband. He knew how to be a good father. He knew how to be a good boss. He knew how to be a good Scout. He knew how to be a good member of the National Guard. He knew how to be good volunteer fireman. And he knew how to be a good Deacon. The essential element required to be really good at all these relationships is well known; there is nothing secret about it. And yet it remains elusive to so many. The secret part of the essential element is this: it can only be accessed through the door of humility. Not a false sense of low self worth. But a clear understanding of whom we, as human beings, are. We are made in the image of God to be like God. We are only like God when we love as God does. Tom, in his heart and mind, knew how to pass through the door of humility on his way to loving those who became a part of his life. Those of us left behind are in the process of experiencing a great, terribly sad, loss. For a balm to heal, Tom left us the example of his life lived in the image of God; in the image of the God of Love.

Condolence: Tom and I were acolytes together at St. Mark's in Pleasantville and became lay readers at the same time in 1977. Over the years he was always there whenever anyone needed anything. A truly good man who adored his family.
