Obituary for Jack R Helmer

Jack R  Helmer
HELMER, JACK R. —88 of Glen Mills, PA, formerly of Linwood, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 3, 2016.

Born to Harry and Hazel Helmer (nee Widoss) in Belle Fourche, SD in 1927, he served in the US Navy as a baker from 1945-1949. Using the GI Bill, he got a degree in education from Black Hills State University and moved to New Jersey to teach. He taught in Egg Harbor, and Pleasantville and then taught wood-shop in Egg Harbor Township for 29 years before retiring in 1989. Having earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth, Jack was proud to pin that rank on two of his grandsons. He loved children, and shared countless puns and jokes with his eight grandchildren. Jack enjoyed traveling and cruising, and visited all seven continents. Jack was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church until moving to Maris Grove retirement community in Pennsylvania 6 years ago.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, E. Suzanne (nee deBlois) of Glen Mills PA; son John “Jack” Helmer (Karen) of Harker Heights, TX; daughter Janet Embree (Nick) of Philadelphia, PA; and daughter Julie McVoy (Todd) of Media, PA; grandchildren Timothy Helmer (Brittaney), Brianna Helmer, Benjamin Helmer, Joshua Helmer, Sydney McVoy, Emmalie Helmer, Colin McVoy, and Jennifer Helmer.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 1:00pm at Central United Methodist Church, 5 Marvin Avenue, Linwood with visitation starting at 12 noon. Burial will follow in Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central United Methodist Church.
