I remember Uncle John when he first got out of the United States Navy. He was contemplating marriage and expressed to me that the person he was contemplating marrying was very special and beautiful. This was before I had met Bette, but after after I met her I was convinced that she was the right person for him. I remember Uncle John working with my grandfather as a carpenter, William F Wagner and Sons, doing maintenance at the Ventnor Athletic Center, building his own home, one in Ventnor, and the other in Nothfield.
In the evenings he worked in the skate room of the Ventnor Skating Rink. I would see him often there, as I was living above the rink and skated a lot. He was an important presence at the Ventnor Skating Rink when I was in my teenage years; he liked to joke around a lot.
When I visited he and Aunt Bette just a few weeks ago, he even joked then. When I admired the picture of him to the right of the door, this same picture of him in his Navy uniform, he quipped, "That's to keep her coming back."
I am certain she will keep coming back to the memories of her life with him, and remembering with fondness the good times as we all will.
