Obituary for Sebastian Cutaia

Sebastian Cutaia
Cutaia, Sebastian 88, of Mays Landing came down from heaven on March 6, 1928 and peacefully returned home to his creator on June 30, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. They don't make them quite like this anymore. Truly a one of a kind, inspirational, unforgettable man. Truly the end of an era. In those 88 years Sebastian was blessed with a full and happy life. He was born in Delia, Sicily, Italy to Lorenzo and Rosa Cutaia. He married the love of his life, Concetta in 1961 and had two children before immigrating to the United States in 1966. Their third child, their little "Americana" would arrive a few years later. Sebastian embraced his new home but never forgot his Italy. He very passionately co-mingled the two cultures by becoming involved in several Italian-American organizations such as The Italian Center Social Circle, The Sons of Italy and the Columbus Day Committee holding the titles of president and chairperson. His role in these organizations provided him the great joy and opportunity to keep his beloved Italian community very close by hosting wonderful holiday parties, countless day trips to great places and creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved as well as serving the community by providing numerous scholarships for local students.
Upon arriving in the U.S. Sebastian's first employer was the Claridge Hotel. He worked during the day and went to night school to learn the English language. He put his heart in to everything he did. He also worked at the Holiday Inn/Penthouse for several years. At the age of 70, he retired from The Trump Plaza facilities department where he served as shop steward. He was honored with a tremendous and loving send-off from his coworkers complete with a huge surprise party and beautiful, engraved watch that he never took off since the day he received it.

Sebastian was a devout Catholic whose faith was paramount in his life. He was a man of God first and foremost. He never wavered in that faith and in any challenging times God was his strength. He was a member of St. Michael's Parish in Atlantic City for 50 years. He never missed Sunday Mass no matter the circumstances and recited the Rosary on a daily basis with his wife. He served the parish for many years by ushering at mass and being present for every function always bringing his bigger than life personality and being available for anything needed.

Sebastian's family and friends were the core of his heart and nothing filled him with more joy than to be with his wife, kids, grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Family dinners where he would happily assume the role of chef’s helper and table-setter were some of the happiest moments of his life. He reveled in having everyone around him as often as possible. Get-togethers with friends, many of whom were life-long relationships from his childhood in Italy, resounded in laughter mostly courtesy of his jokes and unmatched sense of humor. He was there during the good times but also always the first to run to a family member or a friend in bad times.

Sebastian loved music, soccer, crossword puzzles, reading, walking an hour everyday and making and serving his homemade wine and famous Lemongello. But what he loved most was being and going anywhere with his beloved wife whether it was running errands or attending the many festivities they were invited to through the years.

He leaves behind to cherish his unforgettable memory his forever broken-hearted but grateful family: His wife of 55 years, Concetta of Mays Landing, daughter Rosa of Egg Harbor Township, son Lorenzo (Nicole) of Cape Coral, Florida, daughter Carmela of Mays Landing, his grandchildren Raquel, Gia, Emma, Danny and Christian who were the joy of his soul and the loves of his life. Cherishing his memory also are nephews Lorenzo Santangelo, Lorenzo Cutaia, Angie Tellez and their families along with special cousins and many treasured paisani and friends. No one could have asked for, and been blessed with, a more loving, outstanding husband, father, nonno, uncle, great-uncle, great-great uncle, cousin and friend. We will miss him forever but take refuge in the same arms of the Mighty God he trusted and served knowing we will be reunited for eternity.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Michael's Church, 10 N. Mississippi Avenue, Atlantic City with a visitation at the church from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Entombment will be held at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing, NJ.
