Obituary for Robert A. Helm

Robert A. Helm
Helm, Robert A.

Born 2-26-41 in Oaklyn, NJ.

Robert Allen Helm, a man who amassed a fortune in love and respect from his family and friends, departed this world peacefully from his home of thirty-eight years in Somers Point, N.J. surrounded by his sons, Mark and Scott. He was 75 and, while he didn’t mention where he was going, sources close to the family believe he has joined his beloved wife Elaine (and their dogs, Duke and Dutchie) in paradise.

Robert Helm was a man’s man with "Semper-Fi" tattooed on his forearm, proud to have served his country as a United States Marine. He was strong, handsome, amiable, laconic, and wildly capable. It was said that Bob could land a tuna, rebuild an engine, lay brick like an expert mason, fix complex electronics, and drink you under the table—all in the same day.

And his beard was perfect.

He was a loving, dedicated father to Mark (a Nashville College Professor), Scott (his constant companion and caregiver), and Bryan Helm (who followed his father’s footsteps in the defense of our country as a US Merchant Marine and Navy Reservist). Bob was also the proud grandfather of Alec and Casey Helm (of Marmora), and Cooper Lee and Gillian Lane Helm (of Franklin, TN).

Bob loved his wife Elaine, his boys (including his best friend, Barry Gross), his boats, and good bourbon. And he never complained a day in his life. Even at the end, when asked how he was feeling, he would invariably respond, “I can’t kick.”

Bob Helm was a helluva guy. He will be sorely missed.

Services will be held at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield, at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4. In lieu of flowers or fish, please make a donation in Bob’s name to Best Buddies (a non-profit dedicated to enhancing the lives of kids with Autism and other special needs), Ocean City High School, 501 Atlantic Ave., Ocean City, NJ. 08226.
