Cairns, John Jr., 67, of Port Republic, died peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, February 9, 2009, after a brief illness.
John was born in Atlantic City, NJ. He was a graduate of Ocean City High School and the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Anti-aircraft Warfare Training Center in San Diego, CA. He was a proud Plank Owner, signifying that he was a member of the crew that manned the USS Enterprise, the Navy’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, on its maiden voyage.
After being discharged from the Navy in 1964, John worked as a parts manager for Eastern Brake and Equipment Company in Pleasantville, NJ, a family owned company. He enjoyed boating and flying and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. John had been a member of the Galloway Township Lions Club.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Grace Letizia Cairns; daughter Kimberly Anne Donahue and son-in-law Jason Donahue of Fords, NJ; daughter Beth Anne Sabath and son-in-law Craig Sabath of Port Republic, NJ; grandchildren Delaney Jo and Alona Josephine Sabath of Port Republic, NJ and Samantha Lynne Donahue of Fords, NJ; brother Edward Cairns of Ocean City, NJ and sister Frances Cairns Brittner of Cardiff, NJ; nephew Jason Cairns and nieces Linda Hughes, Dawn Taylor and Alyssa Cairns. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence (McCullough) Cairns, and father and mother-in-law Anthony and Josephine (Origlio) Letizia.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 21st at 11:00 am, at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield. Friends may call from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
