Obituary for Jennie Irene Morton

Jennie Irene Morton
Morton, Jennie Irene Monk, 97. After many years of suffering with heart disease, Irene went to be with the lord on Friday, January 2nd, while a resident at Mainland Manor Nursing Home in Pleasantville.
Irene was born to Rosita and Thomas Monk on February 25, 1911 in Philadelphia, PA. At an early age, the family relocated to Pleasantville where she attended St. Paul’s AME Church and the public schools.
As a youth, Irene sang in the junior choir and served as a junior usher. She also counseled the Girl Reserves, Pleasantville.
After her marriage to James Morton, she moved to Atlantic City and joined Asbury Methodist Church. She became Chairman of Membership, Secretary of the flower club, sang in the choir and was advisor to the junior choir under the direction of Maurice Garris.
Irene was Vice President of the local National Alliance of Women’s Auxiliary of Postal Employees, and served on the Atlantic County of the Board of Elections.
Returning to the mainland to live out their golden years, Irene became a volunteer for the nutrition sites. Coming in on the ground floor, she was recently awarded a plaque for 30 years service. She volunteered at Pleasantville and later the Dr. Leinweber site in Northfield.
Over the years, Irene’s interests have been the Wednesday Literary Club, Christian Women’s Luncheons, crossword puzzles, word searches, The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Sixty Minutes. Recently she has enjoyed the Golden Circle of South Jersey, the Wi Mo Moi’s Pinochle Club, and many social activities with Club Quintessence as a quest.
When it became necessary to do less traveling, she became a member of Salem United Methodist Church of Pleasantville.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Donald Morton, of OH; daughters Gwendolyn Carol Young, of GA and Audrey Walker of NY and EHT; a brother, Wilson Monk (Mertina), of Silver Spring, MD; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A service will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 11:00am, at Salem United Methodist Church (wheelchair access), Main St. and Park Place, Pleasantville. Friends may call from 9:00am until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association, Holy Redeemer Nursing Agency, or Salem Church.
