Obituary for Everett Maul Sr.

Everett Maul Sr.
Maul, Sr., Everett (Pop), 96, of Cardiff, NJ, passed away on March 8, 2016. Born in McKee City, NJ on July 24, 1919, to George A. Maul and Emma nee Rose. Everett was involved in an accident at age 5 which caused him to be legally blind by his teens, forcing him to quit school by 8th grade, and work on the family farm. Eventually, his eyesight developed into total darkness, but that did not stop him from going forward: marrying, raising five children, and creating a very successful business, at which he worked until the age of 93. As a young adult he bought used bicycles and autos, repaired them, then sold them for any offer more than what it cost him, which enabled him to enter his tire business. But his true business success, with the help of his wife Regina and his brother Charles, was the establishment and operation of Maul’s Building Supply Company for over 70 years.

Everett loved to go fishing and clamming in his Boston Whaler and spend hot summer days tending to his vegetable garden, playing the piano, harmonica, or accordion. He enjoyed cooking – the kids vied to be first at the table when he would make one of his specialties; porridge. He also diligently worked with his hands whether it be woodworking or other innovative projects. He often quoted “there’s no such thing as ‘if’ or ‘can’t’.” October 9, 1995 was proclaimed Everett Maul Day when he was awarded the Donald J. Sykes Award for “positive contributions made to your community by citizens with disabilities,” although he never considered himself as having a disability nor being handicapped. In 2010, he was honored as the longest living EHT resident. The family will miss partying with him and all the one-sided conversations including his strong political views.

Everett is predeceased by his very caring wife of 61 years, Regina; his only son Everett Maul, Jr.; his granddaughter Jill (nee Duberson) Hartwell; siblings, George Maul, Charles B. Maul; and Florence Couchoud.

Everett is survived by his four daughters, Loretta Maul, Nancy Duberson (William R.), Elaine Maul-Duberson (Steven), and Carol-Lynn Maul, all of Cardiff, NJ; four grandchildren, Dawn Brooke (Joe), Aaron Maul (Kris), Kelly Olson, and Brett Maul; nine great-grandchildren; sisters in-law Margaret Hartman and Ida Thompson; former daughter in-law, Rose Maul; many nieces and nephews; and his dear friend, Pat Hickman.

He was blind man with better vision than most. He was a most pleasant man, who was loved and admired and will be forever missed. He is now at peace, in God’s hands. The family is very appreciative of caregivers Kwasi, Jay, Karen, Ed’s yard work, and of course his daughter, Carol-Lynn, who lived with him through the difficult times.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Everett’s memory to the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Department #1, 6609 Black Horse Pike, EHT, NJ 08234.
