Obituary for M. James "Jim" Watkins

M. James "Jim"  Watkins
Watkins, M. James "Jim", of Northfield, passed away on Saturday, December 24th.

He is survived by his wife, Francine Watkins (nee Bishop); his daughter, Kristi Barnes of Egg Harbor Twp.; his son, James C. Watkins and his wife Nancy (nee Bradley) of Treasure Island, FL; and his grandchildren, James and Jennifer Barnes, and Corinne Watkins.

Jim graduated from Kingston High School, Kingston, PA. Immediately after graduation he and 11 other classmates enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served four years and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He attended Wilkes College, then transferred to Glassboro State College where he received his Bachelor's Degree and his Master's Degree in School Administration.

He taught in the Middle Township Schools in Cape May Court House for nine years. While there, he was the assistant basketball coach and head track coach for Middle Township High School. He was named "Coach of the Year" in 1966 by the South Jersey Coaches Association.

Jim then served as an elementary school principal in Pleasantville for 23 years, retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, Jim worked for five years as the local representative for Elite Enterprises. Jim was active in his community, serving as President of Northfield All Sports, and worked on the Juvenile Conference Committee. He was also a member of the Northfield Environmental Committee and the Birch Grove Park Association. Jim enjoyed all sports and was an avid golfer. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He treasured every minute he spent with them.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday evening, December 28th, at 7:00pm at Central United Methodist Church, 5 Marvin Avenue, Linwood. A visitation will be held from 6:00pm until the time of the service. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central United Methodist Church.
