Obituary for Johanna DeMario

Johanna  DeMario
DeMario, Johanna A. (nee Polistina) of Galloway, passed away peacefully, bound for heaven on August 15th at the Seashore Gardens Care Center.

She was born on July 11, 1921 in Philadelphia and moved to Atlantic City as a child where her parents operated the Regina Pharmacy on Georgia Avenue. She attended school at St. Michael’s Elementary School, Holy Spirit High School in Atlantic City, and Metzgers Finishing School. As part of the war effort, she worked for the Red Cross and US Army Atlantic City operations where she met her husband, Benedetto DeMario. They were married in 1946. They resided in Pleasantville where they raised seven children. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and had many friends in the community. She enjoyed creative writing, poetry, painting, gardening, and choral speaking. She worked in various clerical positions before working for Spencer Gifts, Atlantic City Cemetery, and the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. She was active in the Atlantic County Republican Club and other civic organizations, as well as serving as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was also an active member of St. Michael’s RC Church in Atlantic City and St. Peter’s RC Church in Pleasantville.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carmella and Vincenzo Polistina; her husband, Benedetto DeMario, Sr.; her son, Vincent DeMario; grandson Jonathan B. DeMario; and brothers Bill, Joe (Mary), and Mickey Polistina. She is survived by her children, Carmen DeMario, Rosemarie LoPresti (Giovanni), Benedetto DeMario, Jr., John DeMario (Helen), Dominic DeMario (Mary), and Gerard DeMario. She is also survived by eight grand children: Dominic DeMario, Jr. (Jennifer), Helena Matthews, Lisa DeMario, Andrew DeMario, Josef DeMario, Gianna LoPresti, Barbara Troutman, and Jessica Jones; eight great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Rita and Connie Polistina; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 11:00am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish/Assumption Church, 146 S. Pitney Road, Galloway. A viewing will be held from 10:00am until the time of mass. Interment will follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville.
