Obituary for Edward C Costello Sr.

Edward C Costello Sr.
Costello, Edward (Ed) Crawford, 97, passed away January 27, 2015 at National Church Residences at Mill Run Assisted Living, Hilliard, Ohio. He was a longtime resident of Linwood, New Jersey and subsequently enjoyed many years of retirement in Florida.

Edward was born to Margaret (Patton) Costello and John Costello on December 16, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

If you knew anything at all about Ed Costello you knew that he was an avid golfer. And if you did not know that about him before meeting him you would soon learn about it because Ed’s greeting often started with the query “How are you hitting them”. Ed maintained a lifelong love for the game of golf. On any given snowy winter day you might find Ed driving to the golf course to “check to see if the greens were covered”. He maintained a supply of orange golf balls so that he could see them in the snow.

Edward Costello served his country proudly during World War II. He was a waist gunner on a B17 Bomber Crew which was part of the 384th Bomb Group, 546th Squadron. On his first mission he was shot down over occupied France. After parachuting out of the plane the Germans captured him and imprisoned him at a German Prisoner of War Camp, Stalag 17B, located in Krembs, Austria. He spent 2 full years from June, 1943 – May, 1945, as a Prisoner of War.

Upon his return to the United States after the war, Ed had a long career with the Western Electric Company.

Ed enjoyed the Jersey Shore. This is where he worked, married, raised his family, and enjoyed all that South Jersey had to offer, particularly the beach, ocean, and most of all the golf courses.
Ed spent many enjoyable summer days perusing the bay and ocean in his Boston Whaler. His boat was the location for many family outings including boat rides, crabbing, fishing, and water-skiing.

During his retirement years in Florida Ed located himself as close to a golf course as possible. If it was out his back door – all the better. He made many friends on the golf course who then became his invited guests for cocktail parties on his Pontoon Boat. This sometimes included a boat ride to their dinner location.

Edward Costello should be remembered for his sense of humor, his wit, his Irish Heritage, his enjoyment of a cold beer or a glass of wine and his love of Peanut Butter Tastycakes.

Ed had a wonderful laugh, enjoyed a good joke, and was always up for an adventure. He had a personality that made everyone he met feel like they were his good friend.

Edward Costello is survived by his 4 children – Colleen (Stu) Dreifke, Christopher (Elizabeth) Costello, Edward Costello, Jr. and John (Jenifer) Costello.

“PopPop” Costello is survived by his 8 grandchildren – Sean, Michael, Ryan, Brian, Emily, Ruby,
Sarah, and Jules. He loved his grandchildren very much and he was very proud of his family.

His parents, his older brother John, his wife Gloria (DaPrato) Costello and his wife Marjorie (Person) Costello have preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am, on Monday, February 2, 2015, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 724 Maple Ave, Linwood, NJ. Visitation will be from 10 am until the start of Mass. Burial with military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.
