Obituary for Lucy A Scherer

Lucy A Scherer
Scherer, Lucy A. - 91, a lifelong resident of Northfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness on July 18, 2015 at the ARMC, Mainland Campus, Galloway.

Born on November 4, 1923 in the small farming village of Stetten a.k.M., Germany, Lucy was the eldest of three daughters born to Friedrich and Maria Scherer (nee Haug). In the spring of 1925, Lucy, her mother and infant sister Gertrude arrived in the US to reunite with her father, who had earlier emigrated to begin a new life in America, fleeing the economic hardships of post WWI Germany. After living in Hudson Co., NJ for about a decade, the family, including baby sister Annie, moved to Northfield in 1936.

Lucy adapted well to her new surroundings, soon graduating from the Northfield Public School System, and entered Pleasantville High School, graduating in 1941. Lucy's working career began as a bookkeeper for Packman Bros. of Atlantic City, a food and beverage distributorship. She then worked for S&S Beverage Co. in Atlantic City, for 25 years as a bookkeeper and then office manager. Concurrent with her business career in Atlantic City, Lucy was also an integral part of her parents' wholesale/retail greenhouse business, Northfield Greenhouses, Inc., which they operated from 1936 until it closed in 1970. After leaving S&S Beverage Co., Lucy worked in the office of her sister's family business, Fairway Cycle Honda, until her retirement.

Lucy enjoyed gardening, traveling, and watching her favorite television programs, especially professional tennis tournaments. She was also a most accomplished cook, as her entire family would attest. Nobody could make German potato salad as good as Aunt Lu!! Mostly, however, Lucy enjoyed being in the company of her beloved family and dear friends. Lucy was a single lady throughout her life, living with and caring for her parents, especially as they became elderly. Her selfless love and devotion to family stemmed from her deep and abiding Roman Catholic faith. This faith and her moral resolve have been and shall continue to be an inspiration to her family, who will cherish her memory and generous spirit always.

Lucy is predeceased by her beloved parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude C. and Kenneth E. Williams; and her brother-in-law, Richard J. Long. She is survived by her loving sister and best friend, Annamarie Long; nephews Kenneth E. Williams, Sr. (Carol), John F. Williams (Donna), Robert P. Williams, Jeffrey T. Long, and Joseph A. Long; and nieces Ellen M. Leeds, and Kathryn A. Mason. Lucy is also survived by four grandnephews and five grandnieces; as well as two great grandnieces and three great grandnephews, with another on the way! In addition, she is survived by cousins Elsie Mayer, Eleanor Fulcher, and Francine Lorenzini (Craig) here in America, and numerous cousins in her native Germany.

Lucy was and always shall be the heart of our family, our matriarch, and our family's treasure. To celebrate her life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Church of St. Bernadette, 1421 New Road, Northfield, on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 11:00am, with visitation one hour prior, from 10:00am - 11:00am. Interment service to follow for immediate family and relatives at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
