Obituary for Carmen Barone

Carmen Barone
Barone, Carmen A. Age 88, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2014. He was born in Philadelphia to Giovanni “John” and Giovanna “Jennie” (Falcone) Barone, originally from Colledimacine, Italy. His family relocated to Atlantic City when he was 8 years old. Carmen loved growing up in Atlantic City. He graduated from Holy Spirit High School, and attended classes at the Wharton School, before graduating from Peirce College in Philadelphia.

Carmen was hard working, tenacious, and self motivated. He designed a life he wanted and worked hard to turn his dreams into reality. As a young man, he held many jobs, including selling ice cream on the beach during the summers, and working weekends at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. When Carmen enlisted in the United States Navy, serving our country during World War II, he was assigned to serve on one of the very ships he helped build, an aircraft carrier named the U.S.S. Antietam. During Carmen’s 8 years in the Navy, he served in the South Pacific and was awarded several medals: the Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. Last year, he was presented with the Atlantic County Veteran’s Medal.

Carmen met the love of his life Trudy, while he was selling ice cream on the beach in Atlantic City. They were married for nearly 59 years, before she passed away in 2011. They resided in Linwood, where they raised their two children, and during that time, he ran his very successful accounting firm, Carmen A. Barone and Company, in Northfield, for 30 years. Carmen, who became a Certified Public Accountant in 1957, retired in 1991.

Carmen’s professional career led to memberships in many organizations. He was a 50+ year member of the American Institute of CPA’s, and the New Jersey Society of CPA’s. He served as President of the Atlantic Cape May Chapter in 1972. He was a member of the Somers Point Rotary, and formerly the Mainland Rotary. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and member of the Sons of Italy. Carmen was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, and once served on the parish council and finance committee. Carmen was a former trustee of the Howard Stainton Charitable Trust, and also served as CEO/Director for H.S. Stainton Company Department Store from 1979 – 1992. When his family was young, he coached Little League Baseball, and the Atlantic County Junior Football League Linwood Panthers from 1968 – 1974.

Although dedicated to his business, Carmen did have his hobbies and other interests. He was devoted to his faith and never missed Sunday mass. He loved sports, particularly college football. He was the most loyal University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan, and he never shied away from debating any aspect of that team’s dynamic. Carmen visited the University of Notre Dame, to attend football games, more than 20 times. They never lost a game when he was sitting in their stands. On one visit, he and his son-in-law were in the crowd, while scenes for the movie Rudy were filmed. During summer weekends, Carmen was usually found on his boat. On calm days, he loved to cruise around Absecon Island. Other days, he enjoyed riding up to the Mays Landing bulkhead. His life long best friends Tommy Toland and Frank Woerner were usually along for the ride. When he wasn’t captaining his own boat, Carmen loved to go on cruises. He loved travel and visited spectacular locations all over the world, with his wife and family. He had a deep appreciation for the profound beauty in this world. After retirement, Carmen and Trudy continued to travel, but spent some of their winters in Naples or Boca Raton, Florida. Carmen loved to sun himself under a palm tree.

Carmen will be sadly missed by his loving daughter Francie Josephsen, son-in-law Fred, and their children Dillon and Olivia. Carmen is also survived by his loving brother Louis Barone of Absecon, a sister Clare Wittland of Vineland, and a sister Anna Aarons of Woodstock, Georgia. Carmen’s son Christopher died in 1989. Chris was the father of four sons: Christopher, Steven, Matt and Michael. Carmen was also predeceased by his brothers John, Nugentia “Reds”, and Nick Barone, and his sisters Rita Stouffers and Marie Wittland. Carmen was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a beloved brother-in-law to his in-laws.

Visitation will be held 9 – 11am on Saturday, November 29, at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Linwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow the viewing. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to and condolences may be left for the familly at adams-perfect.com.
