Obituary for Sergio L DeCasien

Sergio Labres DeCasien, 88, of Linwood, NJ, died Thursday, January 27, 2022. He was born March 2, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA, to Alexander and Agnes Miller of Atlantic City. Sergio attended Pleasantville High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Hazel Mae Newcomb of Pembroke, KY, in 1956, and they have three children, David, Debra, and Mark. He is survived by his wife, two sons, daughter, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his sister Rita.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Edward. Sergio was a 10th degree black belt and a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He founded the Martial Arts School of Nisei Kito Ryu Jiu-jitsu, was an accomplished swordsman and taught Iaido (the art of drawing the sword) and Kenjutsu (Samurai sword fencing). Sergio was a senior member on the Board of Directors for the National Martial Arts Association and was always a featured instructor at their Summer Camp in Baltimore, Maryland every year. He conducted many seminars and workshops for other Martial Arts schools. Sergio was a member of Seaview Baptist Church in Linwood where he served as a deacon, teacher, and in various other roles. Sergio worked for the US Postal Service in Linwood, NJ. A viewing and funeral service will be on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Seaview Baptist Church, Linwood, NJ. The viewing will be from 9:30 AM- 11:00 AM followed by the funeral service with the Rev. Frank Reeder officiating. Interment will follow at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Mays Landing, NJ.
