Serafina DiGiacomo Coppola, age 88, died on July 5, 2022. Born in Camden, New Jersey to Filippo and Ermina DiGiacomo in 1933, she began her music career as one of the youngest singers to ever perform with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company. Following studies at the Curtis Institute, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame and a master’s degree from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. Her numerous performance credits include appearances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and other symphony orchestras in the United States. Her over twenty years of teaching experience include serving as the chair of the Voice Department of the Peabody Conservatory’s Preparatory Division and creating the Innovative Opera Workshop Program at Goucher College in 1992. She gave Vocal Master Classes in the United States, Canada, and France. In 2002 the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts honored Serafina as one of a select group of Distinguished Teachers in the Arts. She is survived by her sister, Kathryn and other family members in the United States, Italy, France and Scotland. Interment will occur at a later date at Arlington Cemetery where she will be reunited with her beloved husband, Marcel Coppola, who preceded her in death.
