Obituary for Sallie Ann Self-Stewart (Rice)

Sallie A. Self-Stewart was born on August 9, 1941 in Atlantic City, N.J. Sallie was born to the late Louis and Sarah Rice; she was one of fourteen children.

Sallie was educated in the Pleasantville School System. While in school at the age of 11, she met the late Melvin H. Self. They eventually fell in love and married on May 23, 1959 and were the parents of three children.

After losing Melvin at the age of 25, Sallie, with the encouragement of Pastor John Ewing of Salem United Methodist Church, made the decision to accept Christ and joined the church. There she became involved in many church activities. Sallie made the decision to return to school to get her GED, passing on the first try. She worked by day and went to school at night, and graduated from Atlantic Community College as well as Stockton College with a Bachelors degree, becoming a Registered Nurse at Shore Memorial Hospital. At Shore Memorial, Sallie held many positions including becoming the first black full time nursing supervisor. She was also instrumental in implementing the first computer scheduling system for the Nursing Department, retiring after 29 years as the nursing administrator.

Sallie was a member of many organizations including Delta Gamma Sorority and BPW (Black Professional Women). She was an active member of Ivy Leaf # 18, Order of the Eastern Star. In 1979 she became Worthy Matron. Sallie held the position of treasurer for 33 years. She was also Past District Deputy Grand Matron of Oziel Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Most Ancient Matron of Rehab Court No. 15, Order of the Eastern Star, and Past Royal Commandress of Mt. Olive Royal Court No. 10, Order of Cyrene.

In 1984, Sallie met the late Willie J. Stewart. They married on August 9, 1986, and were married for 20 years. Sallie welcomed Stanley and Nicole as her children with open arms.

Sallie enjoyed gardening, crocheting, baking, supporting and reaching out to family, friends and those from all aspects of her life through cards and phone calls. She was also involved in a local literacy program helping young and old alike learn to read and write.

Sallie is preceded in death by her parents Sarah and Louis Rice Sr, her husbands Melvin H. Self, Sr. and Willie J. Stewart, brothers Louis Rice, Jr., Eugene Rice, Edward Rice, and son Stanley Stewart, Sr.

Sallie leaves four children: Sharon Self of Atlantic City, Melvin H. Self, Jr. of Milmay, Kevin Louis Self of Spokane, Washington, and Dr. Nicole Stewart of Columbus, Ohio, to cherish her memories. Sallie also leaves six sisters and three brothers: Clarence Boggs, Jr., Naomi Brooks, Louise R. Wakefield, Margarita Rice (Henry), Doris Garlic (Mitchell), Cedric Rice (Marlene), Sarah Rice, Tammie Doughty (Darryl), and Leslie Rice (Heather).

Sallie leaves eight grandchildren, Amir Kedar (Diedre) of Lithonia, Georgia, Carmen Self, Lenny Legget, Kwami Vance of Pleasantville, Kaar Naff (Michael) of Port Angeles, Washington, and RheYann Seawright of Linden, and Treeman Isha Stewart and Stanley Stewart, Jr., both of NJ; eight great-grandchildren, De’jah, Amari, and David Kedar; Jaiden, Jenessa, and Julianna Self; and Sean and Kevin Naff, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends, sorority sisters and her Masonic family
