Obituary for Ruth Vivian Slocum (Garrison)

Ruth Vivian Slocum, 79, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, passed away on January 26th at Northwest Hospital in La Porte, Indiana. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time she passed.

Ruth was born at home on February 22nd, 1943 to Jacob and Nora Garrison on Dolphin Avenue in Northfield, NJ. Ruth went on to marry and have four children. It was also during this time that Ruth also found her passion for horticulture while propagating African Violets for Fischer Greenhouse in Bargaintown. She later found herself a single mom with three girls to raise in the early 1970s. Always determined to make ends meet she began working for Sandson’s Bakery where she met her loving husband Jeffrey M. Slocum and they married in 1975. She continued being a working wife and mother next holding a position for many years at The Press of Atlantic City. During this time she discovered her passion for horses. In 1984 she enrolled in a program with Wonderland Farms in West Chester, PA, where she learned horse care and breeding. Over the next 30 years she owned and loved three Arabian horses and an American Paint, most of this time sharing the adventures of boarding them at Days End Farm in EHT. Dressage was her favorite equestrian discipline and she enjoyed watching equestrian events with family well into her later years.

During those years she cared deeply for animals and worked as an officer for the ASPCA. She also loved her dogs Foxy and Woofie.

Ruth possessed a wealth of knowledge in animal care, gardening and sewing. She loved reading and had a library of books on these subjects. She always knew what her horses needed and what was growing in her yard and at the barn. She often spoke of her mother making her dresses out of flour sacks when she was a child. Ruth could make clothing for any occasion.

Ruth approached motherhood with a sense of love and pride that revered faith in God, good manners, respect and education. She loved her home and the holidays and was an excellent gift giver. The joy of Christmas with her will always be in our memories. Her laughter and her presence at the table for coffee and cake will be sorely missed.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Nora, her infant daughter Diane, her sister, Freida, and her husband Jeffrey. She is survived by her children, Danielle (Gregg) Hertzlieb, Lisa Renee Darcusio, and Jacqueline (Fred) Millan, as well as granddaughters Michelle, Heather and Selena.

The family requests that donations be made to Animal Rescues in lieu of flowers. There will be a graveside service Thursday Feb. 2, 2023 at 1:00 PM for family and friends at Friends Central Cemetery, Shore Rd. Linwood, NJ.
