Obituary for Robert Merrill Cornell Sr.

Robert Merrill Cornell, 83, of Egg Harbor Township passed away March 15 after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his loving family when he went home to our Lord. He will continue to live on through his children and grandchildren and will be celebrated and missed by many.

He was born and raised in the Inlet of Atlantic City NJ where he attended Our Lady Star of the Sea School and graduated Holy Spirt High School 1957. He went on to Glassboro State College but left to pursue a semi-pro basketball career with the Washington Generals.

Bob was a US Postal Mail Carrier for over 35 years in Pleasantville where he was very active in the Letter Carriers Union. He also retired after 15 years from the AC Expressway. He loved his job and gained many friendships during his career. He also tended bar for numerous restaurants in the area including Zabers, Copsey’s, Daniels, Rialto, Black Cat and Sherry’s to name a few along with many private parties. He also frequented Randall’s Clam House where he learned to shuck clams and then volunteered shucking at many local clambakes.

Bob also belonged to the Inlet Social and Athletic Club and Northfield All Sports Association where he coached youth sports for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting in his younger years and more recently fishing with his son Joe.

He is survived by his first wife Annette Cordery, who he had four children, Gina Walk (Frank), Robert Jr., Joseph (Jennifer) and Stephen. Two grandchildren, Kylie Kertz (Casey), Cody Walk (Rachel) and one great granddaughter Frankie Marie.

He later remarried JoAnn Hefner and had three children, Ashley, Nicholas (Keri) and Dominic. Four grandsons Justin, Tucker, Lennox and Nolan. He is also survived by his brother Joe, many nieces and nephews, Doug and his loving dog Scrappy.

He is predeceased by his mother Mary Umphred and sister Leah Kraft.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday March 21, 2023 at 11AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 724 Maple Avenue, Linwood NJ 08221 visitation will be held prior to the mass from 10-11 AM. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
