Obituary for Richard Edmunds Smith III

Richard Edmunds Smith III, born November 16, 1936 in Philadelphia to Mary (McVeigh) and Richard E. Smith Jr. Richard grew up in the Philadelphia area and graduated from Quakertown High School. He was recruited to play football for Penn State University but dropped out to serve his country by joining the US Air Force. Richard was in the Air Force Honor Guard, served at The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier but was most proud for serving as secret service detail for First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. After being honorably discharged, he went on to manage a few different plastics manufacturing businesses. In 1976, he opened his own plastics factory, Service Plastic Container Inc. in Egg harbor Township. He owned and operated SPC Inc. for over 30 years, producing various products, licensed novelty merchandise including the giant Coca-Cola and Budweiser Bottle Banks. He enjoyed fishing, the Brigantine beach, the AC Casinos, traveling, watching his Eagles and Phillies, and spending time with his family. He loved sharing stories of his life on the family’s farm with his beloved horses Boy and Bubbles and dogs Scoop and Friday. Family meant everything to Richard and he would do absolutely anything for them. He is survived by his wife Shirley(Luma), 2 sisters – Anne Musial and Mary Gail Brosnahan, 4 daughters- Patte(Jim) Kennealy , Colleen(John) Riggsbee, Shari(Charles) Smith and Nancie(Jerry) Arsenis; 10 Grandchildren-Ryan(Debbie) Fortner, Domonique Fortner(Ben Mabley)), Alex Fortner, Zac(Trish) Riggsbee, Niles(Dana) Riggsbee, Charles Smith Jr, Richard Smith, Julia Arsenis, George Arsenis and Jerry Arsenis , 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Due to Covid restrictions, his funeral and burial will be private. A memorial service will take place at a later date when allowed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made online or by mail in his honor to: Wounded Warrior Project or to the Humane Society of Ocean City.
