Obituary for Phyllis Heaton

Phyllis Lea Heaton Bean, formerly of Maryville, Tennessee went to be with her Lord and squire February 9, 2021 at Atlantic City medical center in New Jersey as a result of the COVID-19 virus.

She was born on October 2, 1949, and was preceded in death by her father and mother Clay and Johnnie Heaton, her brothers Charles and Dennis Heaton, and her stepson Scott Bean.

Phyllis grew up as an extremely intelligent and attractive young person, doing well in school and making lots of friends, she attended Agnes Scott college and maintained the Dean’s list. She met Lawrence Bean in Atlanta, Georgia had a gathering and they fell madly in love. He had written something nice about her in his journal and she read it. They would often go climb Stone Mountain together. She went on to attend law school. She came down with breast cancer in her third year and had to undergo radical surgeries and chemotherapy. She then moved to Alaska to live in a cabin in the wilderness. She maintained a large garden, grew vegetables and filleted salmon. She was an avid reader and shared her books and thoughts with friends and family. She came to New Jersey to her husband Larry’s family home. She enrolled in a course that would allow her to bill insurance companies on behalf of a hospital. Not only did she complete the very difficult course in short order but she did it with honors and went on to secure an important position at the local hospital. After her retirement she focused on her New Jersey garden, arts and crafts and spending time with her husband. She enjoyed excellent health until contracting COVID-19 just a week ago. Phyllis loved her pets dearly. They will miss her mightily, as will we all.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence Bean, brother and sister-in-law Allen and Linda Heaton and many nieces and nephews.
