Obituary for Michael T. Murphy

Murphy, Michael Thomas, 29 of Somers Point, passed away on Thursday, October 25th at Cooper Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Michael was born on April 8, 1989 in Margate to Michael and Barbara (nee Alessi) Murphy. He attended Margate schools and Holy Spirit High School where he was an accomplished oarsman winning many medals, his favorite being The Stotesbury Cup his sophomore year on the Varsity 2nd 8. Michael went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Stockton University. After college he completed internships at both the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. and Sea Life Park in Hawaii. Michael most recently worked as a substitute teacher for the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District and the City of Somers Point as a lifeguard. His most memorable employment, however, was his ten year tenure as a lifeguard for the ACBP. Michael rowed for and represented Atlantic City in the A.C. Lifeguard Classic Races for five years, holding the title of "Singles Champ" from 2006 until 2010.

Michael loved swimming and fishing, surfing, and riding his jet ski. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing, and recorded numerous videos of himself doing so. He looked forward to snowboarding with the Diamond family in the Pocono mountains, and he especially loved animals, dolphins being his favorite, and he would always try to get a glimpse of them while on his surfboard.

We will remember Michael for his wonderful sense of humor, his compassion towards others, his love of the water, devotion to his family, and his selflessness, all of which he retained during his battle with mental illness. Some of his aspirations were hindered, but he still managed to strive forward. We will love and miss him forever.

Michael is survived by his parents, Michael and Barbara Murphy; his brother, Kurtis James Fowles; his sisters, Dana Saville (Steve) and Mallorie Murphy; his niece, Alexis Wagner; his special uncle, Richard Murphy, Jr. (Joanne Martin-Murphy), who was like a second father to him; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and friends.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 30th from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 31st at 11:00am at Holy Trinity Parish, Blessed Sacrament Church, 11 N. Kenyon Avenue, Margate. A visitation will be held from 10:30am until the time of Mass at the church. Interment will be held privately.
