Obituary for Mary Alice Higgins (Gray)

Mary Alice Higgins, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2021, at home with her son by her side.

Alice was born on October 13, 1927 to James and Nellie Gray, immigrants from Ireland and Scotland. Alice, as she was known was born and raised in Pleasantville, NJ., a city she was most proud of. She started her work career early at the age of 14 at Kent’s on the boardwalk. Alice was eager to speak of how she would take the trolley from Pleasantville to Atlantic City. She attended St. Peter’s grammar school and loved to attend Mass as this was always her home parish. Alice went on to graduate from Pleasantville High School. Alice went on to work at Pleasantville Music Shop and considered the owners as family. During this time, Alice and her husband Patrick had a home built in the Pleasant Woods section of EHT (birdland) it was here they settled as a family. Alice during this period made a career change and became a bookkeeper for Kiker Roofing and Sheet Metal at which she retired after 34 years.

If there was ever a question about a building within the City of Pleasantville, she was the one to ask.

Alice maintained a strong belief in God, the almighty and prayed aloud until she could no longer be heard. Alice was a genuine warm-hearted woman, who will be missed dearly by so many.

Alice made and retained many lifelong friendships. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Grace; brother, James; half-sister, Elizabeth; along with Patrick A. Higgins.

Alice leaves behind her son, Thomas; daughter-in-law, Donna; three beautiful grandchildren whom she loved and was most proud of, James, Brian and Erin Elizabeth, who all referred to her as Mom-Mom. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 from 10-11am with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing, New Jersey. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, in Mays Landing.
