Magdalen Lillian Millar Mohn, 89, affectionately known as “Madge Mohn from Cologne” gained her wings on December 30th. She found it too difficult to go on without the tender touch of her loving daughters. She was born in Atlantic City on October 20th, 1931 and was raised in Absecon by her parents David J. and Marion Millar along with her 6 siblings. She graduated from Pleasantville High School class of 1950 where she was a cheerleader for the Greyhounds and voted Class Clown and Best Dancer. Boy could she cut a rug! Madge was a United States Army Veteran who served proudly in the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) where she was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and achieved the rank of Sergeant. The Army gave her the opportunity to travel, fulfilling a life-long dream of hers. In her later years she loved to share her Army stories which she felt gave her some of her greatest achievements. Madge served on the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad throughout the 70’s and 80’s. She attended Atlantic Community College for 2 years. She was a foster parent for many years fostering over 85 children and considered this one of her most cherished experiences. When people would say to her “I don’t know how you did it,” she would reply “I didn’t do it – WE did it.” Madge’s sense of humor got her through some of her most challenging times. She retired in 1995 as a Transportation Secretary from Oakcrest High School.
Madge settled in Germania Gardens with her 7 daughters where she remained for over 45 years. She would often be seen riding her bike, many times with a child in tow and dressing up for Halloween was a staple of hers. In her later years you could always find her on her front or back porch with a glass of red wine where she would often spark up a conversation with her neighbors and the neighborhood children. She was an avid reader where you could find books of any kind in a library she maintained throughout her home. She belonged to PWP (Parents Without Partners) which gave her life-long friendships and enduring memories. Her love affair with QVC and HSN was never-ending along with her love of thrift shops, garage sales and classified ads. Her sewing skills could be seen in many of her homemade outfits she dressed her girls in. She was a die-hard Eagles fan and had a deep appreciation for professional sports including basketball and golf. Madge enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and took so much pride in the home that she loved and in a neighborhood she felt was the perfect place to raise her girls. Her greatest love of all was the love and devotion she had for her children whom she continued to take care of to the very end.
