Obituary for Kevin Joseph O'Brien

Kevin O’Brien was born in New York, NY September 12, 1947 and passed away September 4, 2022 just shy of his 75th birthday. He resided in Absecon, N.J. with his wife, Patricia Anne. Kevin’s service in the Navy had taken him to 35 countries on 5 different continents, he sailed on 4 oceans and countless rivers, allowing him to visit all 50 of the United States while serving for 25 years and 10 + overseas deployments in the United States Navy.
A few of the countless accomplishment of Kevin’s noteworthy awards include the Navy Recruiting Command “Gold Wreath” award for Excellence, Enlisted Surface Warfare specialist Insignia, SECNAV USN/USMC Commendation Medal for Meritorious Performance, SECNAV USN/USMC Achievement Medal for Superior Performance with Gold Star in lieu of a 2nd Award. However, the two he felt most privileged to wear were those he received for service in the Persian Gulf during the embassy Takeover in Tehran and the Iraqi-Iranian War in the Persian Gulf & Straits of Hormus. Because of those two awards, he was granted membership to the VFW where he continued to serve in every capacity.
He used to joke about how he ended up retiring to New Jersey out of all places! He wasn’t sure why, but we are all glad he did!
He was a wonderful giving person with a heart of gold. A husband as good as they come. There wasn’t
anything he wouldn’t do to care for and make his wife happy.
Kevin enjoyed serving and social time with his comrades, history, reading, and collecting stamps and of course, late night shopping on TV. He was a true patriot and there must be ’My Pillows’ in every
room in the house. His sarcastic sense of humor was continuous and contagious. He was meticulous in
everything he did which was reflected in his life of service to his country and his relationships with those he loved.
He is predeceased by his parents, Denis F. O’Brien & Helen (Rooney) O’Brien, and a younger sister
Denise O’Brien whom he loved dearly.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Anne Gill O’Brien, his stepchildren whom he treasured, Brian Gill,
Diane (Gill) Larned, and Craig Gill. Two of the highlights of his life was being Poppy to granddaughters
Audrey and Addie Gill and the rest of the extended family of grand and great grandchildren. He is also
survived by his sister Eileen (O’Brien) Hall (Don) of Granville, TX.
