Obituary for Joseph John Medica, Jr

Joseph John Medica, Jr., 76, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ passed away May 15, 2021 at Shore Medical Center. He was born in 1944 in Newport, RI. His father was a instructor at the Naval Training Center there. He was a “Navy brat”, moving from station to station with his father CBM Joseph Medica Sr. and his mother Margaret and sister Linda until they settled in Absecon, NJ in 1955. He was active in every sport the town offered, and an all-star on the Blue Devils football team. While at Pleasantville High School, he earned a varsity letter in baseball in 1961. When his family moved to Northfield, he was an original member of the Mainland Mustangs football team that in 1962 was undefeated in its second year. A representative to NJ Boy’s State from Northfield, John was a 1963 graduate of Mainland Regional and Muhlenberg College in 1967. In 1968, he began a 32 year career as a Biology teacher and football coach at Oakcrest High School and Absegami High School until 2000. He later earned a Master’s degree from Glassboro State College in 1977. A member of NJEA and NEA, John served as a leader of the Oakcrest- Absegami Teachers Association. He mentored many new science teachers as a Supervisor of Student Teaching for Richard Stockton University. As an educator he was privileged to represent Somers Point as a member of the Mainland Regional Board of Education for 32 years, often serving as president. He was a leader of the board that succeeded in gaining the community’s approval of major improvements to the school’s academic and athletic facilities. He was supported by his wife Janice Medica, RN, the school nurse at Mainland for many years.


An avid history buff and Revolutionary War reenactor, John served with Lamb’s Artillery Company at events from Virginia to Quebec, Canada.


He is predeceased by his father Joseph Sr., mother Margaret, brother Steve and wife Janice. He is survived by his sister Linda Martin (Stephen), and sons Joseph Medica III (Darcy), Peter Medica (Jae Anne). and Daniel Medica (Tammy); and six grandchildren Joseph, Aidan, Michael, Jacob, Andrew, and Brittany, as well as two great-grandchildren Grace and Hayden. He leaves his second wife Gerrie McNelis-Medica to remember him and their many travel experiences had in their motor home, and their winters in Ft. Myers, Florida.


A celebration of his life will be held at Adams-Perfect Funeral Homes, Inc. 1650 New Road Northfield, NJ 08225 on Friday May 21, 2021 at 5:00 PM with a gathering of friends and family from 3 PM until 5 PM.
