Obituary for Joseph James Cummings

Print
Cummings, Joseph James, 72 of Egg Harbor Township, passed away on May 17, 2018.

Joseph was born in Newark, New Jersey and enjoyed living in the small towns of East Newark and Harrison before his relocation to South Jersey. Joe proudly served in the Army in Vietnam as a military police officer and a helicopter gunner with the 25th AVN BN, although he became disabled as a result. Joe’s joy was dedicating his life to supporting his wife and children at home. Joe also had a hilarious sense of humor, exampled by the different sayings he would write on packages of meat or other items being frozen, leading to wonder what you were defrosting for dinner. This sense of humor was passed to his children, especially Jared.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Carole Aloi Cummings; and their children, Jason Cummings (Jaclyn) and Courtney Cummings Prokop (Todd). He is also survived by grandchildren, Charlotte and Jacob Cummings and Ava Jo Prokop; as well as sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Denice and Ken McConnell; nieces Deanna and Alexa McConnell; aunt and uncle Mary and Joseph Quinn; and numerous “Quinn” cousins whom he remembered fondly during their summer antics growing up. He is also survived by many friends whom he treasured, especially Carl Fuller who was his partner as Port Authority Police Officers.

Joseph was predeceased by his son, Jared on March 2, 2018, whose sudden death broke his heart. He was also predeceased by granddaughter Catherine Cummings; parents Ruth and James Cummings; and stepfather John Flynn; brother James Cummings; and mother and father-in-law Josephine and Joseph Aloi.

Although he was a die-hard NY Giants and Yankees fan, he enjoyed watching other teams and visiting various ballparks. During a recent bucket trip to Alaska and Seattle, Joe and Carole enjoyed a game at Safeco Stadium to cheer on the Seattle Mariners.
