John Earnest (Ernest) Carrington Sr.
John Earnest (Ernest) Carrington, Sr. was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on June 13, 1932, to AnnaMaria Carrington and John Earnest Hall. He made his transition to be with his Heavenly Father at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, New Jersey, surrounded by his family’s love and prayers on June 27, 2018. Two weeks prior, John had celebrated his 86 th birthday. John moved to Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, after his mother’s untimely death. There, he attended the public schools from first through twelfth grades. He was a good student and had a love for German, English, math and history, which instilled in him a lifelong love for learning and adventure. Additionally, he was admired by his classmates and at their class reunions he loved to tell stories of their time together. Upon his graduating from high school, John joined the United States Navy and served with distinction aboard the U.S.S. Cushing DD797. While traveling the many seas and oceans, his task was that of store clerk. He was proud to have served his country and honored to have been a veteran. He often shared his Naval experiences that he had during the Korean War in lengthy detailed discussions with other veterans and family members. John told the world about his having met the love of his life, Mae W. (Peggie) Price Carrington and their having been blessed with six children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. During their early years together, teaching their children about life was paramount to them. This included his creating intricately designed board games that were complete with instructions for the children to play. He also tutored them in every academic subject and even taught them how to “Bop.” At Uncle Jacky and Aunt Peggie’s house, company and consultations were always a favorite among family and friends alike. They continuously had a warm and inviting extended family around them. He continued this practice until weeks before his passing. After his service with the United States Navy, John was employed by the Suburban Station Building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He subsequently worked for American Viscos/FMC Corporations in Philadelphia and Rickel’s Home Center in Pleasantville, New Jersey. After retirement he continued to work at Home Handy Man in Pleasantville, and for the Pleasantville Police Department’s Crossing Guard Division. John loved reading National Geographic Magazine his collection was extensive and he enjoyed sharing the facts that he learned from his reading with all. He also loved watching television, especially the news and weather shows. As a sports enthusiast, he was the ultimate E-A-G-L-E-S and Phillies fan, and was so elated to be front and center of the television set when his beloved Eagles won Super Bowl 52! His family will continue to cheer for the EAGLES by singing “Fly Eagles Fly” when they think of him. John is predeceased by his parents, loving wife, daughter-in-law, Yolanda Carrington, and “special son,” James Holmes. Daddy, Dad, Pop, PopPop, Poppi, Mr. C., Mr. Carrington, Uncle Jacky, Jack, John leaves to celebrate his life and continue his legacy his jewels: Jacqueline (Joseph) Brown, Cheryl (Daniel) Mendez, John, Jr., Duaane, Sr. (Lynn), Anna-Maria (Richard) Overton, and Rodney; his grandchildren: Stacey (Jabari) Jordan, Dayna (Michael) Cobb, Gayle Brown, Joseph Brown, III, Candis (Anthony) Richey, Duaane, Jr., Jacqueline, Danielle Mendez, Niya Browne; ten great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; goddaughter, Pamela Denise Price and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
