Obituary for John Auer

Auer, John MSGT USAF Retired, 90, went home to be with his parents, brothers and sister on Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

John was born in Farmington (Egg Harbor Township), New Jersey to Elmer and Magdelena (Johnson) Auer on November 26, 1927. He spent his childhood residing in Pleasantville, having attended Pleasantville Schools.

John enlisted in the Army in January 1946 and spent time serving in Germany during the European Occupation. He earned the Army Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal during that time. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force on April 1, 1950. He spent many years at military bases including those in Maine, California and Florida. He spent time serving his country in Germany at Hahn Air Base and in Spain. At the end of his military career, John spent 18 months serving in Vietnam.

John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Award with one Bronze Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze Service Stars and the Bronze Star Medal.

After leaving the military, John worked at various car dealerships in the Atlantic City area as a mechanic. He and his brother, Elmer, owned race cars and spent many weekends racing them at the Pleasantville Speedway. After his retirement, John joined the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office and after serving over 15 years, he retired as a lieutenant. John then spent many years residing in Florida before returning to his home state of New Jersey where he resided at the time of his death.

John is predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Magdelena Auer; brothers, Elmer, Jr., Harry and Robert; and his sister, Barbara Seuff. He is survived by his son, John Jr.; step-daughter, Vicki Kroger (Richard); step-grandchildren, Richard Charles and Emily Lynne Kroger; as well as his ex-wife Dorothy E. Auer, all of Egg Harbor Township. He also leaves his grand dog and BFF, Zoey.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11am at Atlantic City Cemetery, Rt. 9 and Black Horse Pike, Pleasantville.
