Obituary for James F Gandy

James “Jim” Frank Gandy passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2021. Born on February 15, 1929 in Atlantic City, NJ, Jim grew up in the inlet playing ball at the YMCA and fishing with his father in Brigantine, NJ. He listened to the sounds of Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glen Miller on the legendary piers of the Atlantic City Boardwalk. He bussed tables at Hackney’s Restaurant, tended rowboats at Captain Starn’s Dock, and worked at the American Ice Company. At Atlantic City High School, he played football, basketball and baseball and loved to take pictures of friends in the cafeteria. After high school, Jim joined the Morris Guards and started repairing boats at the Longport Marine Company. It was during this time that Jim met the Coffey family and was introduced to Theresa. They were married in October 1951 and settled in Linwood during the winter of 1952. Over the next eight years, Jim and Theresa had five beautiful children: James Jr, John (Jack), Theresa, Patty, and Michael. In the 1960’s, Jim and wife acquired the restaurant at Mays Landing Country Club and operated it through the early 1970s. In 1978, Jim lost his beloved wife of 28 years. His prayers were answered in 1979 when he married Patricia Bittner. Their son Christopher was born the following year. Whether building a boat, an addition to a house, folding laundry or doing the dishes Jim’s attention to detail created a sense of harmony that only a master craftsmen could achieve. His heart and home was always open to family and friends. He was an active member of St Joseph’s and later Our Lady of Sorrows churches volunteering with the Holy Name Society, bingo, and CCD. He even added a fiberglass support to one of Father Lenard’s statues. Jim was a physical, emotional, and spiritual rock whose beacon of hope helped inspire and comfort those in need. He loved his family, fishing, carpentry, and golf and made the American Water Company millions of dollars watering every inch of his yard. Jim will join his wife Theresa, his sons Michael and John (‘Jack’), his brother John and his parents John and Catherine in heaven. He is survived by his wife Patricia of 42 years, his son Jim (Anna), his daughter Theresa (Mike), his daughter Patty (Ted), his son Chris (Heather), his six grandchildren; Mike (Angela), Lauren and (Salaam), Dillon, Liam, Anna and Jackie, his great grandchildren Leila, Adam and Zack, his daughter-in-law Jody (Joe). There was always a special place in his heart and home for Lynn, Sabiha, Tasfia, Yakeen, Baseema, and their angel Maliha. The family is blessed and grateful for Jim’s best buddy Noel and Kaye. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take a loved one fishing in honor of Jim. A visitation will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (724 Maple Avenue, Linwood, NJ 08221) from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Monday, June 21, 2021 with Mass immediately following. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by and condolences at www.adams-perfect.com.
