Obituary for Helen M. Butler

Butler, Helen - 110, of Egg Harbor Township. Born 09-14-1912 in Fall River, Mass. she passed away peacefully while residing at Royal Suites Health Care in Galloway. Helen was predeceased by her parents Mary Maynard and Mitchell Ouellette, her husband, Collwyn Butler, and seven siblings. Helen was devastated by the sudden loss of her loving husband in 1975. They met when a group of nurses from Atlantic City Hospital met with a group of Atlantic City Electric Co. men after their shifts at a soda fountain in a pharmacy on Pacific avenue near the hospital. She is survived by her son, Collwyn Butler, formerly of Pleasantville, but now residing in Brooklyn, NY. Helen's mother died when she was four years old. At the age of fifteen she moved to Atlantic City to be with her sister, Delina, and to avoid working in the textile mills. After a brief period as a waitress at the Marlborough Blenheim hotel she graduated from ACHS and then from the Atlantic City Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. She worked at various facilities and private duty nursing. Her last assignment was at the Hebrew Home in Atlantic City. She volunteered at schools for vaccination drives and at NAFEC for blood drives. She received an award at her 100th birthday from the local chapter of the Red Cross. She was fiercely independent and lived on her own after the death of her husband until the age of 102 when health conditions required that she no longer live independently. She drove and shopped until she was 99 when a broken hip hampered her mobility. She enjoyed knitting, reading, traveling, and playing pinochle at the Egg Harbor Township Senior Center. She greatly enjoyed a camper trip around the country with her husband. Her son visited on a weekly basis and was most thankful for the help of neighbors, Rose and Tony Oyola, and friend Eve Lombardi. He is greatly appreciative of the very fine care provided by the Nurses, Social Workers, Activity Workers, and staff at Royal Suites Health Care, all of whom made best efforts to give comfort and meaning to her time in residence at that facility. He loved his mother and is eternally grateful for the love, guidance, and values provided to him by both parents. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM on Tuesday October 11, 2022 at Adams-Perfect Funeral Homes, Inc. 1650 New Road Northfield, NJ 08225. Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery Pleasantville, NJ 08232. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross P O Box 37839 Boone, IA 50037-0839, in her memory. Arrangements by and condolences at www.adams-perfect.com
