Obituary for Hattie E. Shomo (Smith)
Hattie Elizabeth Smith Shomo passed away peacefully at home in Mays Landing, New Jersey on October 3, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents John R. Smith and Hattie G. Smith. Hattie was born on June 7, 1932 in Scotland Neck, North Carolina where she spent her early years. She has four sisters, Yvonne, Susie, Alice and Mable; nine brothers, John, Richard, Joseph, Bennett, James, Eddie, George, Franklin and Lonnie. Preceded in death by three siblings, John, Yvonne and Bennett. In addition to her siblings, she has four sister-in-laws, Irene, Ernestine, (Gessie) Pauline and Genia. She was preceded in death by two, Irene and Ernestine. She has three brother-in-laws, Richard, Thomas (John Lee) and Robert and she was preceded in death by all three.
Hattie grew up in Harlem, New York where she attended school. On February 24, 1951, Hattie married the love of her life, Leroy H. Shomo. They lived in Brooklyn (Williamsburg) New York before moving to Queens Village, New York before eventually settling in Mays Landing, New Jersey.
Hattie was the biological mother of three boys but considered by many as their surrogate mother. In addition to raising three children, she was a cub-scout leader and youth leader at St. John's Church in Brooklyn, New York. Hattie loved to knit and crochet, especially aby clothes, a hobby which she later turned into a business.
A loving mother and homemaker, Hattie loved preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. For many years leading up to her passing, she hosted family cookouts which were attended by many. Hattie and Leroy loved to travel by car throughout the United States and Canada.
Hattie was also predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Leroy and son Raymond. Hattie is survived by her sons, Ronald of Mays Landing, New Jersey and Leroy (Bubbie) of Baltimore, Maryland; and her daughter-in-law, Tina. She is survived by four grandchildren, Vanessa, Stephanie, Damon and Roy and three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Skylar and Nicky, who affectionately called her "Nana." She is also leaving behind a host of nieces and nephews which are too many to mention. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
