Obituary for Ethel Cummings

Ethel M. Cummings, 98, of Mays Landing, passed away on November 21, 2018. She was born in Sicklerville, New Jersey on April 21, 1920.

Ethel worked many years as manager of Howard Johnson's on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, and then at Caesar's Casino until she retired at the age of 88.

She is predeceased by her husband Reuben Cummings and three children; Ruthann Tash, Marc Cummings and Aaron Cummings. She is survived by her children, Margaret Premone (Vince), Gary Cummings, Barbara Quinn (John), Donna Vaccarelli (Frank), James Cummings (Rose) and Donna Lynn Lake (Leon); also her grandchildren, Sherri Herbert, Margaret Vandenberg, Maria Fussner, Ryan Quinn, Lauren Rossi, Tara Bruno, Dana Vacarelli, Keith Cummings, Kyle Cummings, David Cummings, Carole Cummings, Victoria Cummings, Elizabeth McDermott and Thomas McDermott; 24 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; her sisters, Rose Johnson of Port Charlotte, FL. and Laura Bridges of Glassboro, NJ.

Ethel loved to go to the casino with her granddaughters; and her sisters who were referred to as "The Golden Girls." She enjoyed her annual birthday parties with the entire family. Ethel had a heart of gold and would welcome anyone into her home if they needed a place to stay.

A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road, Northfield, NJ. Relatives and friends may visit with family from 10am -11am. Memorial services will begin at 11am

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I have many fond memories of spending time with Ethel: 35 Christmases at Donna & Frank’s House, as well as many landmark birthday parties held in her honor. Ethel was a strong individual. She had a great work ethic and a great attitude. I always enjoyed her company, and also liked to write to her between visits. When I was ill this year, I received a get well card from Ethel, who wrote: “This is the first card I’ve sent out to anyone in 50 years.” That made me laugh – as I often did in her presence. I’ve saved that special card and many sweet memories.

Dear Ethel! You stoped at the buffet and you asked for me and I was off! But Fred was sooo happy to see you and I wish I was there! I really enjoyed working with you! I remember before pre-shift, so many times we sat together and you would share with me what was going on! I remember your laugh and you will be missed! I will be there Tuesday to say goodbye to you! Keep laughing! And soo many customers asked for you after you left that buffet! They really loved you! If there’s gambling machine in heaven, i’ll Know where to find you when I get there! I remember your mother when y’all lived in Pleasantville on Washington Avenue by the little store across the street from my home. My mother Elizabeth Elbertson were friends. We the purpose of me contacting you is that I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and I would like to tell you that your mom has a chance of the resurrection of life. Did you ever think about that? If you think back when you were young and there was a robber on the steak next to Jesus Christ the robber said to Jesus please remember me in Paris Paradigms and shoot Jesus said to him truly I say to you this day you will be with me in paradise. Would not just be wonderful to see your mom again she will be as young as the day before she even got married is not wonderful. We were so sorry to hear about Ethel's suffering and passing. She's been a sweet presence in our lives since dear Donna became a part of our family. She'd spend every Christmas with us, and I also spent a weekend in her home (with Donna) many years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there with both Ethel and Reuben (with whom I had a special connection). Ethel was a very strong person, who endured a lot of sadness, and still forged ahead. She was a very conscientious worker, and an easy-going person. I always appreciated her sense of humor. She'll be greatly missed by me, my husband, and especially by my mom, Gussie, who will share more.

Aunt Ethel was a wonderful, sweet, and positive person! We visited not often enough but it was always with pleasure to look forward to our meetings. One could never leave her home hungry, as she was the best cook! We can never forget her homemade potato salad and crab cakes - WOW!
