Obituary for Clarence Paul "Bubby" Walker Jr.

Clarence Paul "Bubby" Walker, Jr., 77 of Mays Landing, affectionately known as “Bubby” departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on Saturday October 8, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Clarence P. Walker, Jr. was born on August 4, 1945 in Atlantic City, NJ to the late Thelma and Clarence P. Walker Sr., who preceded him in death, along with his beloved wife Queenie Walker, his sister, Sandra E. Sawyer, bonus children Linda Porter “Nay” and William Porter, III “Billy”.

Bubby’s academic education came by way of the Atlantic City Public School System. His relentless and exemplary work ethic began as a paperboy at the tender age of eight. When he received his driver’s license, he drove to New York City, seven days a week, to pick up newspapers.

Bubby was employed with Rogers Warehouse (which became J&J Distributors then Allied Beverage Company) for 34 years. During that time, he was the first African American Sergeant of Arms for union elections in Atlantic City. Bubby was a trustee with TNBC since the organization was formed. He was selected by the International Union Trustee to be an observer on the Local Union 331’s first trusteeship. Bubby was a Business Agent for the Teamsters Union, Local 331 and Shop Steward for Local 115.

Bubby retired in 2001 but remained active and loyal as a Teamster. He once said, “the labor movement has been the most rewarding success that any man or woman could experience in a lifetime”. Bubby attended the Black Caucus Conventions and supported his membership and community until his last breath.

In his community, Bubby was unofficially recognized by his kind neighbors as the ‘Mayor’ of the Timber Glenn development. ‘Mayor’ Bubby enjoyed eating at JJ’s Diner in Egg Harbor Township, where he befriended and adored the staff.

Bubby's passion was basketball, especially playing in the ‘Biddy’ Basketball League, with his childhood friend, Bucci, eventually winning a championship. He played on the iconic Atlantic City basketball court, the ‘Yard,’ on Pennsylvania and Arctic Avenue. He played with legendary ball players and was disappointed that the ‘Yard’ wasn’t declared an historical site by the city. He would say as if it was a no brainer… “Wilt Chamberlain… you kidding me…! Was the most dominant player in basketball.”

During his marriage to the late Theresa E. Walker he had one beautiful daughter, Tamia T. Walker.

Bubby leaves to cherish fond and amazing memories to his loving daughter Tamia Walker of Gaithersburg, MD; bonus sons Ronald Porter of Trenton, NJ and Dexter Harris of GA; bonus daughter Shantel Stanley of NJ and special Godson Warren Davis, Jr. (Terri) of Mansfield, TX; two adoring sisters Christine J. Payne of Atlantic City, NJ and Lynn Ann McPhatter (Ramius) of Fort Washington, MD; special niece Shawn Phillips (Ronald) of Mays Landing, NJ; favorite great niece Jameka Moore of Atlantic City, NJ. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and fine friends: George Bucci, John Jiacopello, Gerald McNeely and Rick Cistrunk.

Bubby had three Loves in his Life

Love #1: Queenie, she was his soulmate and best friend who made every moment of his life worth living.
Love #2: Basketball where he traveled and played professionally with the Washington Generals.
Love #3: The Teamsters, Local 331 and 115 – “Loyalty” was his mantra.

Memorial services will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 1709 Arctic Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ where friends may call from 10:00 AM.
