Obituary for Catherine Petit

Catherine “Meme” Jacob Petit transitioned from earth to glory peacefully in her sleep on Friday August 5,2022. Catherine was a strong independent woman who died the way she lived - on her own terms.

Catherine was born in Mon Repos St. Lucia, West Indies to Charles Jacob and Mabel Brice Jacob, and later moved to Aruba, WI with her husband and there gave birth to her three children. The family later immigrated to the Bronx, New York, seeking an opportunity for a better life and there Catherine studied to achieve and earned her GED and then certification as a licensed laboratory technician.

Catherine worked in various hospitals in the Bronx, always taking extra shifts and always staying close to home to provide for and protect her children. Catherine lived for her family, doing all that she could for her children and siblings, as they pursued their dreams to come to the US. Catherine instilled in her children her core values of hard work and education and ensured that they all had a Catholic elementary and secondary education and was so proud when they all earned college and advanced degrees. After retiring Catherine moved back to St. Lucia, believing that her children were grown and her work was done. She remained in St. Lucia for a few years, but learned that her family still needed her and they needed to care for her, and she returned to and settled in Galloway, New Jersey where she remained until her death.

Catherine was predeceased by her parents, and siblings Collins, Theresa and Gilbert.

Catherine leaves to cherish her memory her children: Ron (Irene); Ray (Bernadette) and Annie; grandchildren Michele (Selorm), Jennifer and Andrew and great granddaughter Grace.

Also survived by her sister, Germaine (Evans); brothers, Joachim (Idoni), Patrick (Bertha) and Nicholas (Cynthia). Catherine’s was also blessed with bonus grandsons Wayne and Byron and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. A special thank you to her home health care angels, Lucy and Ginny, whose care, love and cooking allowed Catherine to remain at home and content to the end. She will be missed by those who loved her.
