Obituary for Augustus Scott Feather III

Augustus Scott Feather III
Reverend Augustus (Gus) S. Feather III, of Egg Harbor Township, died at home on January 17, 2022 after a lengthy illness. Gus was born November 19, 1937 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to Augustus S. Feather Jr and Margaret (Moorhead) Feather.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Electrical Engineering. As the saying goes, when man makes plans, God laughs. An engineering career wasn’t in the cards for Gus. The church had always been an important part of Gus’s life and after graduating College, he answered the Call and attended Princeton Theological Seminary earning a Masters of Divinity degree.

Gus married the girl next door, Nancy (Woodrow) Feather in 1962. They have spent almost 60 years together as partners, friends, care givers, and parents. They were a great team, and it is hard to think about one without the other. Gus has served 4 churches in his career and in each one he left an indelible mark on the Church members and the communities. His first church was the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church in Valley Forge PA, he served there for 6 years. He then moved to the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church in Pleasantville NJ for the next 20 years. In 1989 Gus and Nancy moved south to the First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle NC for 12 years. After retiring he took on a part time interim Minister position at the Star NC Presbyterian Church for the next 8 years. As much as they loved the new experience and warmth of living in the South, they moved home to Atlantic County NJ in 2017 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Gus was lifelong fisherman, a passion he learned from and enjoyed with his father. He even managed to have a final fishing expedition off the Ocean City causeway last summer. He also enjoyed tinkering with electronics, in his early days he would build radios and in his later years, he loved building and repairing computers. He built computers for friends, parishioners, community agencies and his grandsons. A lifelong learner, Gus loved reading, and learning about a wide variety of topics, however anything science related was a particular favorite and he enjoyed sharing that knowledge with anyone who would listen.

Gus’s career centered on social issues. He took great pride in leading churches that took an active interest in their communities. While in Pleasantville, he was instrumental in setting up Contact Atlantic, a 24X7 crisis intervention hotline. He also helped develop mediation services for the local courts, also serving as one of the mediators. Gus served on the board of the United Way and was the Chair of the Atlantic County’s Mental Health Advisory Board and Human Services Advisory Council.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents, and Sister Carole Beckwith. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Eleanor Cook (Don), Haddonfield NJ, and Marjorie Feather (Bruce), Manalapan NJ, Grandchildren, Timothy Cook (Chelsea), Smyrna DE, and Andrew Cook, Haddonfield NJ, his sister Bette DeGraw (Hank), Phoenix AZ.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday February 19, 2022 at 1:00pm. Services will be held at the Ocean Heights Presbyterian Church in Egg Harbor Township. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gus’s life.
