Cass, Mr. Hoyal was born in Norfolk Virginia on 10/1/24 in the midst of the great depression- working every possible job including delivering Western Union telegrams before his first official job at the age of 16 working for the Norfolk Navy shipyard as an apprentice shipmate (helping build the USS Alabama & being present at her launch). At 18 years of age he joined (not drafted) the US Navy in 1943- qualifying for the “Silent Service” as Submariner on the USS Flounder in 1945. His Navy records indicate he served on 10 boats: SS 423, AS-22, SS-251, AS-18, SS-407, SS-303, SS-240, SS-523, SS-478 and the SS-476.

Fondly called Chief by buddies, he served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam and retired from the Navy in 1963 as a TMC(SS) after 20 ½ years of service to his country. He retired as a foreman after 20 years at Wheaton’s Plastics factory.

Mr. Cass was a charter member of the AMVETS Post 911 and the Egg Harbor Township Base of the United States Submarine Veterans Orgn. His greatest joy in life was his service in the United States Navy Submarines. He remained active in Veterans meetings until the day he died.

Chief is predeceased by his parents and his only sister Em Cass Manning and survivors- three nieces Nanci Skroski (Gary), Joanne Marko (Tom) and Mary Beckett (Mike), 4 nephews; Douglas, Brendan, Taylor and Eric, one niece Emily.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 28th at 12:00pm at the American Legion Post 352, 1st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Somers Point. A viewing will be held from 11:00am until the time of the service. Interment will follow after a reception at the Legion in Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
